FAO - Low Greenhouse Gas Agriculture: Mitigation and Adaptation Potential of Sustainable Farming Systems PDF Stampa E-mail

This document was first published in May 2008, on the occasion of the High-Level Conference on World Food Security: The Challenges of Climate Change and Bioenergy, Rome, 3-5 June 2008. This revised version is issued in March 2009 in order to provide clarifications requested by readers.
The paper examines current farming practices and uses scientific data of mainly long-term field experiments as case studies for low greenhouse gas agriculture. It also elucidates the adaptive capacity of agro-ecological farming system approaches, using organic system case studies from the scientific literature. Although low greenhouse gas agriculture includes several forms of low-external input farming systems, examples from organic agriculture are predominant in this paper because this system is precisely defined by standards and hence, is best documented in scientific literature.
