Access to Genetic Resources and Benefit-sharing

I am pleased to inform Parties that the selection of representatives of indigenous and local communities to receive financial assistance in support of their participation in the sixth meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group on Access and Benefit-sharing, 21-25 January 2008- Geneva, Switzerland has been completed. The list of beneficiaries of financial assistance is attached for your information. The selected participants will be contacted directly by the Secretariat with regard to travel arrangements.

Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety

I am pleased to inform you that the regional workshop for Latin America and the Caribbean will be held in Bridgetown from 10 to 12 December 2007. The workshop will bring together scientists, regulators and decision makers who are involved in risk assessment and risk management of living modified organisms.

Operations of the Convention on Biological Diversity

In Section V paragraph 36 of Decision VIII/10, the Conference of the Parties inter alia requested the Executive Secretary to make proposals to its ninth meeting regarding the retirement of decisions and elements of decisions taken at its fifth meeting and to communicate such proposals to Parties, Governments and relevant international organizations at least six months prior to its ninth meeting. By paragraph 37 of the same Decision, Parties, Governments and relevant international organizations were invited to submit to the Executive Secretary written comments on the proposals at least three months prior to its ninth meeting.

J’aimerais par la présente vous informer que le Secrétariat de la Convention sur la diversité biologique (CDB) organisera, du 7 au 10 janvier 2008, à Libreville au Gabon, un atelier pour la sous-région de l’Afrique francophone en vue de favoriser et faciliter la mise en œuvre du programme de travail sur les aires protégées. Cet atelier est organisé en réponse à une requête de la Conférence des Parties à la Convention dans sa décision VIII/24, paragraphe 10, sur les aires protégées.
